Monika Herzig new Dean of Music Education
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Monika Herzig, Professor for Artistic Research, becomes new Dean of the Faculty of Music Education at JAM MUSIC LAB Private University.
Dr. Monika Herzig has joined the Jam Music Lab after 34 years as jazz pianist, composer, author, and faculty at Indiana University in the USA. She tours regularly with various groups, especially her all female group Sheroes, nominated as one of the best groups of 2018 by the DownBeat Magazine Critics Poll. She has released more than 15 CDs on prominent labels such as Savant, Whaling City Sound, and Owl Studios and her composition "Just Another Day at the Office" is included in the recent Berklee Publication New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers, compiled under the direction of Terri Lyne Carrington and the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender justice.
She is co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Jazz and Gender (August, 2022) and author ofExperiencing Chick Corea: A Listener's Companion (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017) and David Baker: A Legacy in Music (IU Press, 2011). As the head of the research committee for the Jazz Education Network (JEN), she has founded the Journal Jazz Education in Research and Practice (JAZZ) in 2017. As the new Professor for Artistic Research she will lead projects for the Center for Artistic Research (CAR) and launch the Journal for Artistic Research in Jazz and Popular Music. Projects during the 2022/23 school year include a research lab on historiography, the 3. Conference of the International Network of Artistic Research in Jazz and Popular Music (February 23-25, 2023) and the first Jazz Girls Day in Vienna on March 4, 2023.
