Overwhelmingly positive Reviews for "Bernstein in Vienna" by Peter Erskine and JMLU

Peter Erskine and the JAM MUSIC LAB All Stars released a magnificent album in honor of Leonard Bernstein, receiving ongoing praise from various renowned media outlets.

The JAM Music Lab Private University in Vienna, inspired by Bernstein's long-standing collaboration with Austria's most illustrious musicians, celebrated his art and musical legacy. In 2021, the renowned drummer Peter Erskine was invited as a guest artist to lead an ambitious project. Together with students, alumni, and faculty of the university, they recorded a unique live performance of Bernstein's most famous pieces, reimagined in a new light. This endeavor aligns with JAM's primary mission: inspired by jazz masters, to educate and nurture the next generation of jazz musicians. Peter Erskine himself directed this remarkable project.

The musical lineup featured:

  • Peter Erskine - drums
  • Danny Ziemann - bass
  • Danny Grissett - piano, Musical Director
  • Robert Unterköfler - saxophone
  • Andreas Varady - guitar
  • Bertl Mayer - harmonica
  • Cozy Friedel - violin

Several prestigious jazz magazines have praised this album. A reviewer from "Jazz Drummers" wrote in the June 2024 issue: "How would Peter deal with the circumstances of playing a brass drum set in a big concert hall? The answer, masterfully as always! The fact that he is playing beautiful arrangements of Leonard Bernstein music makes this recording all the more special. For us drummers, we can all sit back and enjoy Peter’s beautiful touch on the instrument."
